Tymon Smith catches up with the director and cast behind the series

Movies, series, streaming

As the Marvel Comics Universe blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy comes to a close with the release of the third film in the series, director James Gunn and the cast speak to us about how they feel regarding its end and the success and popularity of the franchise.

When you made the first film, did you have any idea of how popular it would be? What will you miss most about it, now that it’s coming to an end?

James Gunn: I felt good about it from the beginning, like we were doing something different. The world needed a space fantasy that was different from the ones we’d seen before. I’m gonna miss the characters. That’s the saddest part for me. I’ll see the actors again, they’re my friends, but I won’t see the characters.

Kevin Feige (president, Marvel

Studios): We’ve had trilogies before, but this feels different. Guardians was the first movie that was completely outside the Avengers realm. It tied in with Thanos and Infinity Stones, but The Avengers weren’t in it and we weren’t setting up Tony Stark’s next adventure or linking it to Captain America. It was an attempt to say, we don’t want to just do superhero movies or Iron Man movies or Avengers movies. We wanted to do a big space movie and it worked because we had James Gunn directing, which made it unique within the pantheon of the MC. I’m proud of that.

Chris Pratt (Peter Quill/Starlord):

I read a few reviews by people who said Guardians was going to be the first big flop. I reminded everyone how far the trilogy has come. I knew how important it was to be present the moment it ended because I’ve been part of productions that have come and gone, like Parks and Recreation.

At the end, it felt like the last day of school before summer, when you’re not going back and don’t know if you’ll see these people again.

What was it like for you, having not been part of the franchise before, to join the cast for the final instalment?

Will Poulter (Adam Warlock):

I was nervous from the outside looking in because I’m a big fan of the Guardians movies. Within the Marvel universe, I admired this trilogy the most. I hadn’t imagined being a part of it, so I was excited to experience this great cast, which made me feel welcome. It was good fun.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is now on circuit.
