1949: Vic Toweel, in his professional debut, knocks out Johannes Landman in the second round at Johannesburg’s Wembley Stadium. Toweel was a member of the 1948 Olympic team that won all of South Africa’s medals — two gold, a silver and a bronze — in London, though Toweel was eliminated in the first round. He remains the only South African to win an undisputed title. 1957: Hugh Tayfield takes four wickets on the final day of the third Test against England at Durban’s Kingsmead, bringing his second-innings haul to 8/69 and 9/90 in a drawn match. Needing 190 to win, South Africa reached stumps at 142/6. England led the five-Test series 2-0.

2011: Nkosinathi Joyi retains his IBF strawweight crown after his bout against Japan’s Katsunari Takayama at Johannesburg’s Emperors Palace is halted because of a cut.

2021: Temba Bavuma scores 40 on the fourth day of the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi, before South Africa are bowled out for 245. Pakistan reached their 88 target in just under 23 overs to win by seven wickets for a 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
