With rolling blackouts at their worst, the ANC thought it was a smart move to convene an energy symposium. The event, attended by its new secretary-general Fikile Mbalula and energy minister Gwede Mantashe, was clearly designed to convey a message that the governing party was pulling out all the stops to end load-shedding. But as communicators say, some matters are just impossible to spin. Thanks to the public broadcaster, the public witnessed the energy dialogue plunge into darkness as Mbalula took the podium. “That was load-shedding there; quite ironic given that the talk is on the energy crisis,” quipped an SABC news presenter. It was an apposite capturing of the crisis.
