It’s understandable that Durban mayor Mxolisi Kaunda is desperate to lure tourists to his city this holiday season. But sending his deputy city manager, Musa Gumede, to take a dip at Umhlanga’s main beach this week was perhaps a bit overzealous.

Despite Gumede assuring the public the beach was safe for swimming, independent tests done on the very same day showed the E.coli count was six times higher than what is considered safe. Meanwhile, the mampara mayor, fully kitted in body suit, goggles, swimming cap and all, went frolicking at North Beach, where, conveniently, the water was declared safe for swimming.

Wonder what he has against his deputy manager?
